Sunday Best Reading Series
Sunday Best presents a series of spoken-word performances featuring fiction writers, poets, and dramatists, sometimes in collaboration with other artists. The series pairs local poets and writers with those from outside the neighborhood. We program well established, undercelebrated and emerging poets and writers of ambition and talent, forging community in the process. We present good, lively work, traditional, experimental or of whatever stripe, for the simple important joy of words and language, providing a window into the world of Northern Manhattan arts and artists and out onto the wider worlds of writing. We hope to provide an alternate scene complementary to that which has flourished downtown, creating a cultural oasis at the end of the A line for thirsty lovers of bookish and spoken word arts.
Events are held one Sunday per month in The Lounge at Hudson View Gardens, one of the oldest co-op communities in Washington Heights. The series is sponsored by the Spoken Arts Group of Hudson View Gardens under the aegis of the co-op’s Community Affairs Committee.
All events start at 4PM unless otherwise specified. A suggested contribution of $7 covers admission to the event, snacks and drinks, and attendance at an after-reception to meet the writers.
Since the inauguration of the series in 2005, an impressive array of writers–from the widely published to the newly emergent–have read their work in The Lounge. As part of its mission to broaden and deepen the influence of the literary arts in Northern Manhattan, Sunday Best has featured a number of local writers from the Washington Heights and Inwood communities.
The Lounge at Hudson View Gardens is located at 116 Pinehurst Avenue (at West 183rd Street). The closest subway stop is at the 181st Street station on the A line (use the 184th Street exit). The Lounge is also convenient to the 1 train (181st Street), and the M98 and M4 buses.
