About WHFR
A noncommercial, volunteer-run, freeform community radio station based in Washington Heights, NYC, Washington Heights Free Radio is a place where people come together to make noise. It has been in some form of operation since February 2004, and now we are primarily a web station with regular Wednesday live programming, occasional non-Wednesday programming, and even more occasional in-the-flesh live music or literature events.
Through this independent media outlet, we hope to provide an alternative to the commercial-run entities (or even "public" radio) that dominate airwaves and webstreams across the country; create an environment where our pool of volunteers can develop and exercise their skills to the end of diverse programming and operations; foster community; bring local focus to the neighbourhood of Washington Heights, and Upper Manhattan in general; and have fun through the loosely defined medium of radio. Over the long term, we hope that a simple majority of programming will be both created by residents of Washington Heights, and targeted to the residents of Washington Heights.
Even though you can listen from anywhere in the world, and even though all those other East Coast stations start with a "W," the "WH" of our name is very important to us. Many of the folks—musicians, writers, artists, students, citizens—who participate in Washington Heights Free Radio do indeed live in Washington Heights, or in the surrounding Upper Manhattan neighbourhoods Harlem/Hamilton Heights or Inwood. Some of us knew each other before WHFR, some of us didn't. But we come together every Wednesday in this living room that is WHFR, a home in some way, and attempt to connect with you in your home.
